Gun Safety and children…..OMG think of the children!

It’s been a long week, and this made me laugh. So I’ll just leave this right here.

  1. dmarks: A good parent. Much better than instilling irrational and dangerous phobias about guns, by far, Silver.

Sounds like a bad parent to me. Keep your guns (if you must own them) locked up. There is no reason to teach “gun safety” to small children. Stats show children should be kept away from guns. They are too young to understand how dangerous guns are. But that won't stop the gun nuts from claiming that actions that would save lives (keeping guns locked up and away from children) are “irrational and dangerous phobias”.

  2. It's interesting that Dervish always defaults to the Nanny-State role, by uttering such nonsense as “there's no reason to teach children firearm safety, without defining “children”. This is the same tactic used by the gun control camp, who use crime statistics involving under 21 year olds to bolster their agenda….because, you know……19 year old gangbangers are “children”.

Luckily my daughters have learned firearm safety and the respect for the tool, unlike the gun control cabals sad attempt at defining their narrative into “gun safety” [though it contains no educations aspect].

  3. There's a reason I often defer to you on firearm matters, CI. It is because you know what you are talking about, and tie things back to the Constitution and common sense. It has nothing to do with “a**-kissing”.

And when I follow your arguments, I find something solid.

As for your daughters, it seems like you have been an exemplary parent, and have avoided the dangerous phobias and the pitfalls of relishing ignorance about firearms as if it were something to be proud of.

What is interesting is that you misquote me, even though my original comment is still visible. He leaves out the word “small” and then claims I'm talking about 19-20 year old people. I can see why dmarks is so impressed.

Those who don't respect the tool and have irrational phobias about it are doomed to be a tool.

Anyway, the experience and sage advice of those with experience with both firearms and child-rearing is illuminating. The ranting of those who lack either? It just isn't.

  6. I love the way you gun guys go on and on about how the gun is a “tool” and it's sooo important to learn how to “handle the tool.” If it takes you more than 5 minutes to show someone how to use a friggin' gun, you probably shouldn't be showing them. It's not rocket science. You don't have to be particularly bright to figure it out. There is a value in showing kids what guns can do when they are young so they can see just how much damage they can do. Many a childhood shooting was a consequence of the children involved not understanding the seriousness of the danger. As for just proficiency and maintenance and such, again, not rocket science.

Probably much the same as I 'love' how you anti-gun guys demonize the firearm with irrational appeals to emotion. As for rocket science, that ll depends on how proficient you wish to be, on which type of firearm and which manner of shooting. The science of ballistics doesn't involve rockets, but it doesn't fit on a brochure either.

Many a childhood shooting was a consequence of the children involved not understanding the seriousness of the danger.

I'm glad that we agree. Now I merely wonder why the camp that has tried to reframe its label into “gun safety”, is so opposed to actually educating kids on the safe handling [or not to handle if they happen to find one] of a firearm.

  8. Thank you; I like to think that I've done a decent job so far….but parenting is never finished. My girls can shoot [rifle/pistol/bow], start a fire, make a shelter, navigate by terrain association….and are generally fit, capable young ladies who know not to back down when threatened.

  9. What about the irrational appeals to emotion the pro-gunners use to frighten gun nuts into believing the government wants to “confiscate” all guns? There is even a conspiracy theory concerning this being done via a UN treaty.

BTW, you've been incorrectly labeling fact-based arguments “irrational appeals to emotion”. The “appeal to emotion” fallacy involves using emotion based arguments sans facts. Just thought I'd point out your fallaciousness here in calling someone citing facts as “appealing to emotion”.

  10. You haven't cited facts. You have cited studies which you believe provide foundation for your position, but you can only do so by ignoring the studies that counter it. One reason, I don't rely on statistics, or appeals to emotion.

But carry on, as I find these appeals entertaining.

Because these “studies” are NRA-funded and flawed. OF COURSE I ignore those who dissemble.

People who wish to believe lies will always be able to find someone who wishes to lie to them. Especially when there is a lot of money to be made by maintaining the lie.

  12. “Those studies”? So now you're attempting to claim that any study that doesn't comport with studies that you use [who funds those by the way?] are funded by the NRA?

You mean studies such as the Priorities for Research to Reduce the Threat of Firearm-Related Violence conducted by the Institute of Medicine and the National Research Council; a study authorized by the CDC at the Executive Order of the current POTUS….that decidedly doesn't help the gun control camp…and is indeed never cited by them? Studies such as THIS one?

Please. I thought you would do better than to make such an absurdly unsupported assertion such as that. I should really learn not to give you the benefit of the doubt and jut assume that you'll be intellectually lazy.

Interesting that the “those who dissemble” link points to an extreme organization that has an explicit mission toward lying about matters in order to further its agenda of stealing from and harassing law-abiding citizens and to encourage legislators to engage in what is in effect jackbooted fascist laws to crush the rights of the people.

They aren't armed with reason. They are armed with falsehood and an agenda of making this country more oppressive and dangerous.
